In the Primary School at Lakeside College, we begin with the child. From their very first days in Prep, every learner is welcomed as a unique child of God, known by name, loved as they are, and given the space to wonder, question and grow.
These are the years where foundations are laid, and we take that responsibility to heart. Through a careful balance of explicit, tailored instruction and rich guided exploration, our students build the literacy, numeracy and thinking skills that open doors, alongside the curiosity, courage and confidence that keep them walking through. Our teaching draws on what contemporary research tells us about how children learn best, because our students deserve nothing less than our very best practice.
Just as importantly, we come to know each child deeply. Regular checks of learning progress mean we understand where every student is and how they are travelling, so teaching can be shaped around their individual needs. Where extra support is needed, our compassionate team of student support officers works alongside classroom teachers to provide small group assistance, while our Individual Differences Director partners with families, teachers and allied health professionals to develop individual education plans. Our dedicated wellbeing team walks alongside students and families too, because a child who feels safe, settled and supported is a child ready to learn. We are well resourced to care for the whole child, and no child journeys alone.
Our classrooms are places where kindness is practised, not just taught. Guided by the words and example of Jesus, children learn to listen to one another, to include, to forgive and to serve, discovering early that their gifts are given not only for themselves but for others. Through a meaningful program of learning, our students are positioned as caretakers and stewards: of their classroom and school, of one another, and of the world around them. These are the prosocial skills that shape a life: empathy, patience, generosity and the courage to stand alongside someone who needs it.
This same empathy shapes how our children innovate. Through human-centred design thinking, our students learn to notice a real need, imagine possibilities, build something, test it and try again. They discover that failure is simply part of figuring things out, and that their ideas can make life better for someone else. It is a wonderfully practical way for young children to live out compassion — every project beginning with the question, "who is this for?"
By the time our students step into secondary school, they carry with them far more than academic readiness. They leave the Primary School with strong foundations, a genuine love of learning, and hearts open to others - adventurous, purposeful, compassionate and relational young people, prepared for all that lies ahead.
