Ministry & Mission
Lakeside College’s vision and mission statements focus on developing lifelong learners who strive for excellence, serve and care for others and work to their full potential.
As a Christian school, Lakeside College offers a program of spiritual development which aims to see students grow in their understanding of God’s love for them through Jesus. Spiritual development activities include weekly worship services, morning devotions, pastoral care programs and retreats. The ministry program of the College considers the varying cultural and religious backgrounds of our families and extends respect at all times.
Each student, as a child of God, is known, valued and heard. The four core values we focus on as a Christian community working within the Lutheran tradition are compassion, service, excellence and love. Our mission and values are reflected in our approach to learning and teaching as well as the pastoral care of our students and staff.
Chapel Services
Each week, all students attend a Chapel service. Most weeks these are held separately for Junior Primary, Upper Primary, and Secondary students. For significant days in the College and Christian Calendar, such as Ash Wednesday and Remembrance Day, we hold whole College Chapel services. Services are age-appropriate and inclusive and share with students the good news of Jesus, and his love for them.
Services last about 15 minutes. Parents and carers are warmly invited to join us.
Prayer for Students and Families
Throughout the year in our staff devotions, we pray for each of the students at Lakeside College by name. We don't mention individual needs or issues, but simply pray generally for God's blessing and protection on the students and their learning, and for God’s blessing on their families. We also invite families to contact us if there are ever specific things we can pray for, or other support that we can provide.
Student Voice & Agency
Over the past few years, the College has made a considerable effort to give students a voice and agency in our worship services with students leading and conducting Chapel Service. We have also embedded a servant leadership program in our Primary School which allows students to explore issues of need and justice both locally, nationally and internationally and use their exploration to problem solve and actively examine solutions to the reasons for injustices.
We have established a Mustard Group at Lakeside College which meets on a regular basis. The Mustard Group meets to allow students to discuss and explore their spirituality and to allow them to share their beliefs and faith in a supportive environment. Recently, the Mustard Group attended a prayer meeting held at Camberwell Grammar School, where students from other schools were able to pray and share their ideas about their faith in God.
We have a strong belief in the importance of running a rigorous Christian Studies program from Prep to Year 12. We also incorporate a student formation aspect into our Year 11 and 12 Retreat program and are looking at how this can be expanded to other year levels. It is our sincere hope and prayer that our students, many who are unchurched or non-Christian, leave Lakeside College with a strong sense of our Christian values and beliefs as reflected in our Lutheran tradition.
